Tia's Thread - Aas Paas ya Saath Saath!!!

I can't emphasise need for togetherness enough specially in a marital relationship. 

You see, husband and wife are not each other's superheroes. They are a super team together.

Think about it as being Avengers, instead of Superman or Wonder Woman rescuing damsels in distress. 

Husband and wife face each other's past, present and future along with all past demons and angels together.

They do not go off fixing or exploring on their own.

It's also part of bonding. I can give a recent example.

Our friends and family in North America who came to our wedding in India were asking about a re-union for a while since they had so much fun then. So my husband and I were planning a re-union in Toronto. 

We finally settled a weekend in this October when they could come and stay at our place (however many we can fit in our place and accommodation for those who we can't fit).

So I told my husband that I will take charge in sorting a place for them to stay and he can figure out how to get them to our house (like pick up at the airport for those who are flying in or taking the train).

Finally when we got everything sorted, we gave a high five to each other and fist pumped/hip bumped. We make a great team.

If I wanted, I could have done it all. If he had to, he could do it too. But where's the fun in that? I'd rather we do this together, like everything we do together.

That doesn't mean that we each don't go off on our own with our friends occasionally. I meet my friends for coffee or tea and he meets his for a drink at the local pub/coffee shop/whatever. We need individual times too, other than couple times.

But somethings are better done together, specially those which impacts and involves both of us like doing something for our families, solving our problems, facing life's challenges and of course exploring our true selves together as we get to know each other and ourselves better every single day.  

The day I see Dev and Sonakshi doing that, I will know that they have finally reached where they can truly be a couple in the real sense.

My grandmother (my Dida) used to say that the two sides of a river always go everywhere together as in aas paas (Bengali: aashe pashe). But they are never together in the real sense as in saath saath (Bengali: saathe saathe).

A great marriage is like Peanut Butter and Jelly, like Butter and Garlic, like Ghee (Clarified Butter) and Khichdi. They both taste good individually, but they are phenomenal together. Saath Saath, not Aas Paas!!!



EPISODE: The episode starts with Sonakshi asking Ishwari about the Dixit girls.

Ishwari looks sad.

Sonakshi tells Ishwari: If you don't want to talk about this, then it's alright.

Ishwari says: No, Sonakshi. I won't make this same mistake again.

Sonakshi wonders: What mistake?

Ishwari says: I did it many times. I didn't use to tell you the bad news of the house, because I didn't use to think of you as part of my family. I did so wrong with you. Not just wrong, I want to tell you everything that is in my heart. Because now we are one family. Besides does anyone hide anything from their friends?

Sonakshi says: You can tell me whatever is in your heart. Like you share everything with Dev, you can share with me too.

Ishwari: If I don't tell you, then whom will I say? Whom will I say that I have missed my daughters' love?

Sonakshi says: You didn't talk to Dev about this?

Ishwari says: How can I talk to Dev when he is responsible for this pain of mine?


Sonakshi is shocked: Means? Those three... Dev? What did Dev do? What happened?

Me: Now now, Ishwari. Dev might alienate his sisters, but you have to take responsibilities here as well. It's the parents' responsibility to keep the children together, not the kids' responsibility to do the job of parents. If Dev screwed up, you should have for once supported your daughters who might have been the injured party. But knowing the past version of you, it might have been you siding with Dev which ruined your relationship with them along with their relationship with Bhaiya.



Asha brings tea to Bijoy in Bose house when Bhaiya comes there.

Asha greets him and ask him to come inside. Bijoy greets him too and asks him to sit.

Bhaiya sits down. 

Bijoy asks: You are here suddenly. Is everything alright?

Bhaiya says: Yes. 

Asha asks: What happened? You are looking tensed.

Bhaiya: I have just come from the hospital.

Bijoy and Asha are shocked. 

Bijoy: You just said that everything was fine and now you are saying that you are coming from the hospital?

Me: Jab dekho tab adha ugalta hain yeh aadmi. Abey, main Kolkata se aa raha hoon nehin bol sakta tha bey?

(He always says everything in instalment. Couldn't you had said that you are just back from Kolkata?)


Bhaiya: Actually, I went to the hospital in Kolkata where Sona delivered Soha.

Bijoy and Asha are even more shocked.

Bijoy: You went to Kolkata? 

Bhaiya: Yes.

Bijoy: But why?

Bhaiya: No reason. I thought I should go there. And I came here directly when I returned from there.

Asha says: Don't worry. Whatever you want to ask, ask.

Bhaiya: You will tell me everything, naa? I want to know everything.

Bijoy: Dev beta, you went to Kolkata for this? 

Bhaiya: Yes. Actually, the years I didn't spend with Sonakshi, I wanted to know them. So if you have any pictures, I'd like to see them.

Asha says: Yes. I have them. I will get them.

She goes to get the pictures.

Me: It's a good attempt in the sense that now Bijoy is seeing the repentance and the willingness to bridge the seven year gap. But I still think that Bhaiya should have waited until Sonakshi also was present. It would be better if Sonakshi walked him through the pictures. Because Asha can't speak about Sonakshi's state of mind or feelings beyond what she observed nor Bijoy can fill in those blanks. Only Sonakshi can tell how she felt when she first felt Soha moving inside her, how she felt when she heard Mamma for the first time etc. 

I think that Bhaiya should have called Sonakshi and waited for her before going down the memory lane.


Sonakshi comes to Elena angry. She says: You knew everything but you didn't tell me.

Elena says: Calm down. What have I done?

Sonakshi says: How can Dev do this?

Elena says: What has Dev done? If you don't tell me, how will I know?

Sonakshi says: Dev didn't attend Neha's wedding and then didn't return for 15 days. You knew this. 


Me: Ummmm... That's it? That was the reason for the big sulk? I mean how many times would he attend his sister's wedding? No really. Did his sister join in his happiness when her marriage broke or did she make sure to pass on taunt every time she saw them together or happy? Then how can Neha expect Dev to be happy in her marriage when his heart broke? Would Neha rather Dev do what she did and attend her wedding while passing comment/taunts and sulk and stomp away instead of staying away and let her be happy?

Don't caring and consideration go both ways? 


Elena: Of course I knew this.

Sonakshi: Then why didn't you tell me?

Elena: At that time it was not necessary to say all this?

Sonakshi: Why wasn't it necessary?

Elena: At that time you hated Dev bhai. You didn't want him in your life. If I had told you at that time that he has changed or say that everything changed here or say that he didn't even attended his sister's wedding nor shed a single tear. What could I have told you?

Me: If you could not have said all these, then why did you bother sharing information about his past affairs with Sona? Which one would have likely made her turn more off from Bhaiya do you think, Elena?


Sonakshi: You shouldn't have hid it from me. Dev is not like this. He can fight the whole world for his sisters. He is that kind of man. He...

Elena interrupts her: Sona, this is the truth. This is what happened. After you left, Dev bhai changed completely. It was very hard for all of us to understand him. 

Sonakshi thinks and says: Dev was never like this. Why did he do this?

Me: For that matter you aren't also the way you are now. So why be surprised that this break up changed both of you and leave it at that. Now what needs to happen is that two of you to fix the mess together.


Bhaiya is sitting in his office and going through old pictures and sonogram. He caress baby Soha's face which was adorable.

Sonakshi comes there. She changed her outfit. 

Me: Thank God, the previous one was shapeless grandmother-in-law dress. Also, she is in better make up.


Sonakshi calls his name. He says: You are here? You shouldn't have come here.

Sonakshi says: Why? You can go to Kolkata without telling anyone and I can't come here alone without telling you? What are you hiding? 

Sonakshi pounces on his loot.

Bhaiya stammers: There's nothing there, Sonakshi. What are you doing?

Sonakshi sees them. Then she says: This is nothing? 

Bhaiya: This is just some of your picture and reports, that's it.

Sonakshi: You are hurting yourself alone here and you think I should walk away from here knowing this leaving you alone.

Bhaiya: I am not hurting myself. I am trying to reduce my pain of past 7 years. 

Sonakshi: Like this? Dev, then the time was different, we were different.

Bhaiya: Exactly. When I should have been there, I was not there.

Sonakshi hugs him.

Then she says: Now what? Will you photoshop yourself in these pictures or put father's name on Soha's birth certificate? 

Bhaiya: If I have to do that to fix my past mistakes, I will do them too.

Sonakshi asks: Is it that important?

Bhaiya: Yes, it's that important.

Sonakshi: Then why can't I be part of your past 7 years?

Bhaiya says: Sonakshi, people want to go to the moon. They don't want to go to the Sun. Because Sun is just a ball of fire.

Sonakshi says: Look at me.

Bhaiya looks.

Sonakshi: I am part of your life, no? If I am, then share with me all your mistakes.

Bhaiya looks at her.

Me: Now, that's more like it. This is what needs to happen. Not self-flogging but problem solving. Together, not singlehandedly. No one needs a hero here. Good job, you two.


Ishwari is sitting in Bose house.

Asha brings a plateful of samosa and says: Arre, you didn't have anything. 

She turns to Bijoy: You are also sitting like this. You didn't offer anything?

Bijoy says: How will you hear anything from inside the kitchen? I asked her. She didn't take anything.

Asha cribs: If you had asked, she'd hardly sit like this.

Bijoy laughs: Asha, you don't trust your husband...

Ishwari interjects between their cribbing: I want Sonakshi to come and live in my home.

Asha and Bijoy are surprised. Bijoy says: When we talked last time they said no for marriage...

Ishwari says: Yes, but when they never got divorced, why should we put this condition for marriage before them?

Me: WHATTTT? Bhaiya and Sonakshi are not divorced? 

Let me get this straight.

So in the past 7 years, Bhaiya cheated multiple times, was about to commit public bigamy and Asha attempted to coerce Sonakshi to commit bigamy as well. 

Am I getting you so far, CVs? 


Ishwari says: I mean that whether Dev and Sonakshi will get married again, when will they get married, if they will ever get married again, they only know. It's their decision. But the truth is that I can't wait any longer.

Bijoy says: Then you want that Sona leaves our home and...

Ishwari: My home, she comes to her own home. That house had been empty for so long without Sona. I want to give her her place back in her home.

Bijoy smiles: Ishwariji, what you are saying is right. But the last decision will be Sona's.

Ishwari gets sad.


Me: Ishwari is a lot more eager to get Sonakshi home than either Bhaiya and Sonakshi are eager to be together. Everything has turned upside down. Nothing is making sense anymore.

The only song that is playing in my head, YEH KYA HO RAHA HAIN!!! (What is going on)



Bhaiya and Sonakshi's office. Sonakshi is back in Bhaiya's chair, Bhaiya is on the desk.

Bhaiya says: I can't even remember when I met them last. I didn't even met Neha and Riya's husbands. It used to feel like then that I didn't even want to meet them. I didn't even want to know about them as if I don't care about them. I didn't even realise when they left. I never felt like they were not home. 

Sonakshi: Neha and Riya are with their families. But Nikki? Where is she? 

Bhaiya: When we tried to find Nikki, we found out that she was living in a girls' hostel. Everytime Maa went to visit her or go there, she used to leave the hostel and go away. After some time, we also gave up our attempt to meet her.

Sonakshi: But Nikki was still a child. She was alone. Despite that you didn't...

Bhaiya: I was not capable of doing anything at that time. After you left, I couldn't do anything. My house changed, the whole family got scattered. Whoever used to come to me to share their problem, I used to hand them money and send them away. It felt as if I am buying loneliness by giving money to my family members. I understood that I will never learn how to maintain relationships. I was fulfilling a son and a brother's responsibilities. But after you left, I even left even those responsibilities. I could not even do it. If you were there, you could have teach me and make me understand. And may be I won't have done that.

Sonakshi says: But why didn't you tell me anything?

Bhaiya: By what right I could have told you this? 

Sonakshi: By the same right which you used to enter my home and started living there.

Bhaiya: I came there as Suhana's Papa. I hadn't came as your Dev.

Sonakshi says: Agreed. There was distance between us. But I never took away the right you had on me. You gave it up yourself. 

Bhaiya: After you left, I lost everything Sonakshi. I couldn't manage anything. And then you and Suhana returned in my life and everything started to change.

Sonakshi: I am with you. You should talk to your sisters.

Bhaiya: No, how will I go in front of them?

Sonakshi: They are yours. Your own sisters.


Me: Off ho. Sonakshi, come to the point. Bhaiya doesn't get twisty talks. 

Bhaiya, let me get this cleared up for you. 

Your sisters are your sisters. Just like your daughter is your daughter. Nothing can change this.

Do you recall what you did when Suhana refused to call you Papa? You offered to take a test and when you pass, she will call you Papa. You passed and she did. Now she is your no. one cheerleader.

Now repeat this same strategy three times for three sisters. 

Easy Peasy, Lemon Squeezy?


Someone knocks on the door and says to Bhaiya that everyone is waiting for him.

Then he leaves.

Bhaiya says to Sonakshi: Sonakshi, wherever they are, they are happy. I don't want to create problem in their life by entering in their life again. 

Sonakshi asks: How did you know that they...

Bhaiya says: Sonakshi, I will have to attend a meeting then we will go home. Okay?

Bhaiya leaves.

Me: Aaaannnddd the escapist returns. There runs Bhaiya from uncomfortable situation. Sonakshi buy a harness. You will need it in the future.

I actually thought CVs have turned you around 180 degree. Good to see some consistency is still left.



Sonakshi: Dev, I know and you know too that you are lying to yourself. I know that until you fix all these, you won't be able to move forward. You used to say naa that our story is incomplete because your... (corrects herself) our family is incomplete. Until our family is complete, we can't be complete.

Sonakshi and Bhaiya is by a car.

Sonakshi says: Dev...

Bhaiya: Sonakshi, now please don't start again.

Sonakshi: Listen to me once. 

Bhaiya says: Tell me.

Sonakshi: Let's talk about today. We are together now, right?

Bhaiya: Right.

Sonakshi: We were separated from each other for 7 years. And you yourself said that you had just fulfilled duties until now, not relationship. But with me, you have to maintain relationships, not fulfil duties only. Dev, I will walk by you every step of the way. I am with you. Every time you get weak, I will support you. And you will have to support me the same way. Dev, I want to live with you, in my house, in our house. I just don't want to live with you. I want to live with my family, together. 

Me: Hain? That means Suhana style? Get one big house and everyone moves in there? How will that work with Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarians? Or may be buy a huge building and build separate floors for different families. That must be the solution, no?

But Sonakshi, point pe aao (Come to the point). Bhaiya is looking bored and we are too thanks to your talking in circles. 


Sonakshi continues: Dev, I don't want to be away from you, even one day. And all these 7 days... What do they matter? Everyone remain confused, including out families. That's why I have decided something. I have decided that I will live with you. 

Me: Ohhh... When Sonakshi was saying that she wants to live with her family, their family, I thought she meant both Bose and Dixit family. But I forgot that the moment she got her lau, now she has conveniently chucked Bose family into garbage bin. Who needs those people who were by her all these years.  


Bhaiya: I think you have some magic book. You always know what I want to hear and you say exactly that. Now that you have decided no one's father can stop you.

Sonakshi drawls: Devvvv.....

Bhaiya: Except one father.

Sonakshi: Shut up. Let's go.

Bhaiya: Where? 

Sonakshi: To convince that dad.

Bhaiya nods and they leave.

Me: Awww, Sonakshi. You didn't have to even bother to talk to Bijoy. His house is your hotel, no? You can come back anytime, get anyone in anytime and get out anytime. What a great daughter you are.

And Bhaiya, you must be so happy to know that all your cribbing about feminism and equality vanished the second Sonakshi came back to your life. Now what feminism and what equal rights? It's all about you and your family.

Sonakshi, you are what I call convenient feminists who use feminism when they want to win against the opposite gender and discard the ideals completely when they get their work done.

Please don't claim to be a feminists anymore. You are making a mockery of equality.


At Bose house, Bijoy is looking at Soha's dolls and stuff and feeling sad. Asha comes there.

Asha comes to him: Arre you...

Bijoy says: I have decided, Asha. Whoever wants to go, can leave. But these stuff won't go anywhere. They will remain here. 
Asha says: She is going where she belongs.

Bijoy: Asha, I understand this. But why is all these happening in a hurry? What is this just giving a call to say that Dev is coming to pick up. You will say that this was going to happen but I am not ready to accept this, Asha.

Me: Wow, so they didn't even bother to talking to Bijoy. Just called and told them that they are off. May be wanted the unpaid servants to clean after themselves. Who knows? With their attitude it really seems like Sonakshi was living in hotels. Even hotels need 24 hour advance notice. 


Asha smiles and says: Daughter's parents are never ready for this day. But we have to have courage, no?

Me: Actually, the day both son and daughter's parents learn the same lesson and prepare to let go of both genders the day they get married, is the day men and women won't be treated differently in the society.

In Western society, both genders leave home after marriage, some even when they go to college. Since, son's parents are not getting old age insurance and daughter's family are not losing out on the same based on gender here, son or daughters are not differently valued.

Also, the result is that girl's family are not treated like disposable tissues by their daughter and son's family are not treated as VIPs by their sons who deserves to be put in a pedestal for popping out a male as opposed to a female.


Saurabh calls from downstairs: Baba, someone came to meet you.

Bijoy: I don't want to meet anyone.

Asha: Look, if you sit here, you will continue to brood. Come and let's see who it is.

She drags him down.

It's Sonakshi and Dev. 

Me: Must have come to check out and hand out tips for good long service.


Asha says: Arre wah, you two came?

Bhaiya: Yes. 

Bijoy doesn't look at them. 

Sonakshi says while looking at Bijoy: I came here to take your blessings. I can't go without it. I can't start my new journey like this.

Me: Why bother? Get it from your family. These people didn't even feature in your family account.


Suddenly Soha comes there: I was also feeling the same.

Me: WTF? CVs, the way you had been flipping Soha from one house to another, it looked more like she has learned how to tele-transport herself. WTF? First she came to Bose house with Asha and Sona, then the next day she was in Dixit house, then she was back again in Bose house? How is that even possible? 

Now what? The child genius have figured out magic portal?


Asha smiles huge: Arre, my rascal also came...

Soha: I was hiding behind Mamma, Papa. You got surprised naa, Dadu?

Bijoy nods.

Soha starts buttering without any context: Dadu, I learned from you what qualities one need to be a great Papa. 

Bijoy smiles.


Me: Really? Why suddenly she started on this topic? Methinks on the same note as Sonakshi. 

Sonakshi must be like, I don't give a eff about your opinion. But I have to pretend that I need your blessings. Not that I care whether I get it or not. I have a family to go back to and you didn't get the subscription in that VIP club.

Soha is like I have to butter up Daadu playing at his emotions. Although even since I got Papa, all I said is he is the best and his family is the best. I can't live without Papa's family but had been living without my Mamma's fake family for days without any issue. But if I don't butter Daadu, he won't be fooled again into thinking that any of us care about him. We need to keep his delusion intact. After all he is the moron who believes that son and daughter are equal. Wait until I get married and show my best Papa in the world how to kick him to the curbs for my real family which is now raising my future husband. What goes around, comes around baby.


Soha turns to Bhaiya: Papa, you promise me that you will be like Daadu.

Bhaiya looks at already flattered Bijoy: Sorry, beta. I can't be like your Daadu. Because there is only one person like your Daadu. There can be no one like him. Yes, but I can promise you one thing. I will always try to make you and your Mamma happy and I will try not to make you cry.


Me: Oh don't worry, Bhaiya. Wait until Soha does to you what Sona did to her dad. You will be identical Bijoy Bose standing with the same expression like where did I go wrong by treating my ungrateful daughter like my son?  


Bhaiya looks at Bijoy: Mr. Bose. Today I asked you for your whole life's treasure. Today I can understand how you must be feeling. Today not only one, but two daughters are leaving this home. Now I know why you must hate me. I am sorry. 

Me: Honestly, Bhaiya sounds more sincere than Sonakshi and Soha. Frankly, I am pissed off at Sona when she completely omitted her family from her family count. The same family who supported her in all situation. Ungrateful woman. 


Bijoy holds Soha's face and says: Beta, you don't have to take any promise from your Papa. Because your Papa is the best.

Bhaiya smiles through tears.

Me: Bijoy Bose always appreciated sincerity and he also recognises it. Unlike others, he doesn't get fooled by flowery talks. He can read people like a book. When Bhaiya showed sincerity, he reciprocated. Until he didn't, he didn't get fooled. He is a great man and my favourite character in the show along with Golu.


Asha says: Soha's Papa is the best and Soha's Daadu is also the best.

Ronita says: And Soha's Daadi is also the best.

She comes down the stairs with Dida where she was listening.

She says: Yes, Sona di. Ishwari ji came to talk to Maa and Baba about this just before you called.

Bhaiya gets surprised: Maa was here?

Me: Why? This is the same MO since forever.


Bhaiya got tears in his eyes. He wipes his tears. Sona has totally Sahara eyes. 

Me: Shows how much she gives a eff about leaving her family, no?

Saurabh jokes: Dev babu, you are behaving as if this is your going away.

Ronita says: Baba, let's do one thing. Let's keep both of them here.

Dida: If we could do it, wouldn't Bijoy have done it already? This decision is Sona's own.

Asha says: Right. Now even if Sona wants, she can't change this decision.

She walks away crying.

Bhaiya nods at Sonakshi.

Me: Allow me to interpret. Bhaiya is signalling, since you don't care, can I show a little concern?

Sonakshi is like sure, knock yourself off. But hurry. We gotta ditch these losers. My real family is waiting. 


Bhaiya consoles Asha.

Soha asks Sona: Mamma, why is everyone so sad? You know, right? Papa's house is just half an hour away from here. 

Me: Oh really? Then why didn't you want to return here leaving your Daadi even for seven days? Isn't it funny how they are showing women to have zero sense of loyalty to the people they grow up with?


Bhaiya and Sonakshi touch everyone's feet. They bless them.

Bhaiya holds his hand to Bijoy for handshake. Bijoy smiles and hugs him.

Bhaiya smiles huge too.

Everyone is happy.

Saurabh says: Bose family don't like these senti moments. Shall we have a hug so that everyone smiles?

They group hug.

Me: Good riddance. Sona, don't ever come back. Bose family are better off without you.


Bhaiya and Sonakshi along with Soha arrive at Dixit house. It's decorated.

Bhaiya and Sonakshi say together: Maa...

Bhaiya says: Arre, I told Maa not to do all this. But look... Do you like this?

Sonakshi says: Do you listen to her? I like all these. Besides, she spoke what was in her heart. Last time she didn't get a chance, no? So don't say anything to Maa.

Bhaiya: Oh, you already built your team?

Sonakshi smiles.

Me: I could have enjoyed these scenes more if Sonakshi hadn't pissed me off earlier with her attitude. 


They are about to enter when Elena stops them.

Mamaji also come there: This is preparation for your welcome. Wait here.

Golu comes running: BigCha, BigCha, you came...

Soha says: No stupid, we didn't come. We are going.

Golu says: You stupid. 

Soha says: You stupid.

She is about to step in when Mamaji stops her: Arre, little angel. How come you are coming in? You will also get welcomed, no?

Soha says: No, no, cool dadu. I went there and said bye to Mamma with Asha. Now I will welcome Mamma here with you. 

Everyone laughs.

Golu feels jealous: You got to say goodbye and welcome too and you also went on drive? (Squints at Bhaiya) BigChaaaaa....

Bhaiya gets into pacify mode: Suhana, no need to bother Golu. Golu, I will take you on a bike ride, okay?

Golu is happy: Yay!!!

Me: Good. Bhaiya learned to balance. But Bhaiya, 

Jo waada kiya woh iss baar nibhana hi padega...
Roke toofan ya doosri priorities, bike ride jaana padega...

(What you promised this time, you gotta fulfil.
Whether storms stops you or other priorities, you gotta go bike ride)


Ishwari comes with her worship stuff.

Bhaiya starts: Maa, all these...

Sonakshi interrupts: Very pretty, Maa. And your saree is pretty too.

Ishwari says: You liked it?

Sonakshi nods with a huge smile.

Ishwari is relieved: Good. I was so concerned.

Elena says: Buaji took such a long time to get ready. Should I wear this saree or that one, which one will look better?

Sonakshi smiles.

Mamaji says: Okay, Ishwari tell Sonakshi how to do this ritual.

Ishwari started to instruct her, but says: You know what to do.

Sonakshi is about to start the ritual and Radha interrupts her: Be careful Sonakshi. Don't fall down in excitement or it will be bad luck instead of good luck.

Sonakshi smiles and says: Don't worry, Mamiji. Now nothing bad will happen.

Mamaji chimes in: You are absolutely right, beta. Now everything will be good. 

Sonakshi does the ritual and comes in. 

Bhaiya smiles huge.




PRECAP: Ishwari asks Radha for keys.

She says: Sonakshi has come back in this home. Now I want her to manage her responsibilities. 

Radha reluctantly hands over the keys.
