Tia's Thread - Courtesy!!!

Today, I will talk about courtesy or what we also refer as manners.

Now this is something we learn from our school, parents, social structure.

For example, when you request something, you say please.

When that request has been granted or if someone has been nice and polite to you, you say Thank You.

When you are wrong, you say sorry. Even if you are not intentionally wrong, you graciously apologise if something you say or do has hurt someone's feelings or been unintentionally disrespectful.

These three words - Please, Sorry and Thank You, are used daily in numerous ways in Canadian society. So much so that Americans make fun of us for using it all the time. 

But Canadians are also famous for their gracious nature and courtesy. When you come to Canada, the first thing you will notice is how total strangers will hold the door open for you, if they are rushing somewhere and they even go around you they will say sorry and excuse me, when you get a service anywhere like restaurants or retail businesses even the customers will say thank you for the service.

I like this polite and gracious approach. I was not born in Canada. But my family had always emphasised on manners. So I had no problem integrating into my adopted country. 

However, another thing my grandmother (who is my role model of how a woman should be like) emphasised on is that when someone is rude in return to your courtesy, don't waste your time continue to be courteous to them. They don't deserve your gracious behaviour. Be a lady, not a pushover.


In the show, I think Bijoy believes in the same policy. He had always been courteous to Dev until he did something wrong. 

When Bhaiya troubled his daughter, he hated him. Then Bhaiya extended his hand in truce, he accepted it. But then again Bhaiya did something which made him lose his respect in him again.

In season one, he gave Bhaiya a chance, he dumped his daughter and made her cry.

He gave Bhaiya another chance when he agreed for marriage, he left his daughter to struggle with infertility alone to run after his mother.

It happened in season two also. Bhaiya extended his hand in truce, Bijoy accepted it. Then next thing he knows, Bhaiya bundled up his daughter and granddaughter in the middle of the night and disappeared to his home without a thank you or good bye.

This time, his cautious behaviour is understandable. You can only give so much chances. 

However, he is not a jerk.

When he sees true change and sincere and honest emotions, he is not the kind of person to keep grudges. 

Ishwari has proved herself, so he will be gracious to her. Bhaiya is yet to prove himself to Bijoy. So as of now, he can at the most be polite to him. Until then, Asha's continuous nagging is only make him dislike him more. But it won't change his opinion of Bhaiya.

You can't force people to like someone nor you can force people to hate. 

Asha needs to back off and let Bijoy come to term with this sudden change on his own time. The poor guy had zero knowledge of what was going on, his daughter said one thing which he believed and then next thing he knows, she is all over him accusing him of ruining her life and running to Bhaiya as if someone had locked her in her room all these years without food and water. 

He sees the happiness. But he also needs the time for his own relationship with Bhaiya. Not everyone needs to fall for Bhaiya on the same day at the same time specially since he got no reason for it.  

As long as he is courteous and polite, that's more than what Bhaiya deserves after his attitude with him.


P.S. Today is a very busy day for me. I will be in a meeting for about an hour. I will try to update before and after the meeting. But if I can't finish it on time, I will finish it later for sure. EPISODE: The episode starts with Bhaiya asking Sonakshi to go on vacation because he wants to spend time with her. He wants to say whatever is in his heart which he could not say in 7 years. He wants to say that the biggest mistake of his life was going away from her. But he doesn't want to reduce his feelings by talking about them. Does she also think that they should go somewhere? Like Paris?

Sonakshi looks at him.

Me: Arre wah, Bhaiya. That's why people say that when you keep intelligent company, your own intellect improves. Good idea. Go to Paris.


Sonakshi: It's too far. We should go somewhere close, no? So that we don't have to go too far from Soha? So let's go nearby.

Me: And as people also say that when you keep stupid company, your own intellect suffers. Hence proved. 

Sonakshi, in season one you were dying to go to Paris. Now he is asking you to go Paris and you want to hover over Soha. First you two go to Paris for a week and then take everyone for a family trip. What's the big deal?

Just like my husband and I are going to Kelowna in early August to spend time with family and then we will go to Scotland late August to spend time with each other. 

Soha has fifty thousand baby sitters around. Let her bond with Ishwari and you go make your own bonding. Good lord. Soha is as it is too much self-sufficient.


Bhaiya comes closer, Sonakshi is surprised.

He says: Is this close enough?

Sonakshi smiles. 

Bhaiya smiles too.

Just then both get phone calls. Both say that they are on their way.

Me: And this is precisely you two should go somewhere far far away. Aa gaya naa vodafone ad colgate ke ad ke beech mein?


(See how vodafone ad interrupted colgate ad?)


Both hangs up the phone. 

Sonakshi says: It was Maa. (Me thinks Ishwari since respect is dripping like mango juice out of ripe mango)

Bhaiya says: It was Mogambo (Me thinks Bijoy since respect is a four letter word here)

Sonakshi smiles (Respect is also pretty non-existent here for one's own family)

They go to each other's home using one car.

Me: That means one is without a transportation. No worries. Sonakshi now can hijack auto. 

Elena is hugging Sona and chanting her name. She says: I am very happy. Do you know, I can't sleep at night. So now tell me.

Sona: Means?

Elena: I mean how did you feel, how did Dev bhai proposed to you, how did he convince you?

Me: Elena needs juicy gossip of someone else's love life to live vicariously since her love and life are both in the dumps.
Sonakshi: What did you think? That your Dev bhai did everything? 

Elena looks as if she wants her to elaborate.

Sonakshi: I did everything. I found him, I drove a Rickshaw to get to him, and I got down on one knee and proposed to him.

Elena is surprised: You proposed Dev bhai?

They giggle.

Just then Soha comes there and asks: Mamma, what is propose?

Elena and Sona look at each other.

Sona says: Don't worry about propose. What did you do since this morning?

Me: I don't get it. Why couldn't she say that propose means making a request? Like giving an offer. What's the big deal?  



Soha: Me? I helped Dadi to make salad for you.

Sonakshi is pleasantly surprised.

Me: See? Soha is so self-sufficient. She has to be since you and Bhaiya become Mr. and Miss India whenever your mood fluctuates. So go to Paris without hesitation. Soha will be fine. 


Soha: Did you know Mamma, I have never had salad like that before. That's why I am hiding.

Sonakshi chides her: Soha, you should not say this. Dadi is making so much effort for Mamma.

Elena laughs.

Sona elbows her: Shut up.

Sona opens her arms to hug her: Come here.

Just then Soha hears Ishwari calling her.

Soha says: Sorry, Mamma. But I am running away right now. Bye.

Sonakshi calls after her. But Soha runs.

Elena laughs and says: Buaji is even more excited than me.

Sonakshi admits: Actually, whatever is happening is happening because of her.

Me: Yup, I agree. Otherwise you two morons could hardly do anything.


Elena says: Now that you are here, everything will be fine. 

She gets sad.

Sonakshi asks what happened.

Elena says if Vicky was also happy for them, it would be great.

Sonakshi says not to worry. Now that she is here, everything will be fine.

Just then Ishwari comes there and calls Sonakshi.

Sonakshi gets up and says: I was just coming to you, but...

Ishwari smiles and says: But your sister stopped you.

Elena says: Sorry Buaji, but I was so excited so...

Ishwari smiles: It's all right. I am so excited. So you must be too.

Elena says: Yes, now you talk with Sona. I will go see Golu.

She leaves.

Me: Haan bas dekh ke hi aayegi Golu ko ki abhi tak exist karta hain ya nehin. 

(Yep, she will only see if Golu still exists or not)


Ishwari and Sonakshi smile at each other.

Ishwari says: Sonakshi, you are looking very good.

She does the hand thingie which means taking away evil eye. I don't know what that thing is called.

Sonakshi makes mock angry faces.

Ishwari says: Arre, so that I don't put evil eye on you.

Sonakshi says: Kids never get evil eye from their mother. Come and sit.

She tries to make Ishwari sit.

But Ishwari stands still: Say that again.

Sonakshi jokes: Oh, you want to hear that? Not only today, but I will call you this everyday and annoy you. Maa, Maa, Maa, Maa, Maa...

Ishwari smiles huge and hugs her tight.


Me: See this relationship? There is no awkwardness, no hesitation, no questions. Just pure acceptance and comfort. Do you know why? Because Sonakshi knows that this time Ishwari was not forced to accept her and Ishwari knows that Sonakshi has wholeheartedly forgiven her without any reservation. Both made their own efforts to fix their relationships out of their own will and not because someone made them do it.

So now, they have formed a mother and daughter bond which is not awkward or uncertain. 

Now if you apply the same on Bhaiya and Sonakshi's relationship, you will see the awkwardness, the hesitation, the feeling of walking on eggshells. Why? Because they each know what circumstances brought them together. 

The first relationship created with genuine feelings and honesty. The second by manipulation and lies. 


At Bose house, Sourabh says: Maa, if Dev and Sona get married again, then it would be so much fun.

Asha says: They are already married.

Me: What? WTF? WTH? I mean whaaaaaaaaaaatttttttt? Okay. Clarify something to me here.

Are they divorced or not?

If they are not divorced, then how was Asha arranging Sona's marriage with Jatin? 

And that means, Bhaiya was blatantly cheating for 8 years and he was about to commit bigamy with Nisha.

Great!!!


Dida says: Since when did you become so boring, Asha? If they get married again that means, all the celebration once again, all the shopping too.

Asha and Saurabh laughs.

Bijoy asks: Why did you made everything vegetarian? Dev Dixit is coming, but you could have made some non-veg.

Asha: Because Dev Dixit is pure vegetarian.

Bijoy: Asha, this is my house. We are Bengalis. At least you could have made one fish item.

Saurabh agrees with Bijoy here: Correct.

Asha makes faces.

Me: Again, I will give the same advice I gave to Ishwari yesterday. Don't piss of the family member before the new person comes. Dev has been around non-veg before. He has even cooked it for Suhana. He doesn't eat it but non-veg food doesn't bother him. So let others have non-veg if they want and make vegetarian food for him. 


The doorbell buzz. Saurabh opens the door and it's Bhaiya.

Saurabh says: Welcome.

Bhaiya says: Now you can't get rid of me.

Saurabh says: That means training starts again.

Bijoy smiles: It seems as if they are childhood friend.

Bhaiya says: Not best friend, he is my brother-in-law. And I haven't come to meet my friend, I have come to my family.

Asha smiles and nods.

Dida says: But we don't consider you our family.

Bijoy is shocked.

Bhaiya stammers: But I thought that...

Dida says: I didn't finish. I won't consider you our family until we have a Bose family hug.

Bhaiya smiles.

Asha says: Maa...

Dadi laughs.

Bhaiya says: What Dadi, you scared me. I am always ready for this.

They all run for hug. Bijoy is watching them with a smile.

Asha turns around and says: Arre Bijoy, you are also part of this family. Come on, come on.

Me: Good to know, Asha. In fact along with Bijoy, I also had a doubt. You see the way you all gang up on him, you would think he is the common enemy, and not a family member.


Bijoy says in a deadpan tone but with a smile: It was very funny joke. I felt like laughing hard.

Dev approaches Bijoy: Mr. Bose, you...

Bijoy asks everyone to go have food and walks away.

Dida says: Now you are part of our family. Come and have food.

They all go except Asha.

Bhaiya says: I was going to make you run away with me. But your daughter came in the middle.

Asha swats at him: Rascal...

Bhaiya asks: Are you happy?

Asha says: I am very very very happy.

Just then Bijoy comes there and says: If you are done talking, shall we go?

Asha says yes and asks Bhaiya to come. She leaves.

Bijoy was about to go when he turns back to Bhaiya. He gets worried.

But Bijoy says: Welcome home.

He holds his arm.

Then he walks away. Bhaiya smiles huge.

Me: Bhaiya, start shadowing Bijoy. This is your probably last chance. You will never get a better human being to model yourself into. You don't have a father. He can be that missing link which I had also told you in season one. You lost that chance then. Now is your time to make that connection. Learn what you can from him. 

And Asha, please stop harassing Bijoy. He knows better than you how to handle relationships. Let him form his own bonds. The more you force, the less he will feel inclined to do anything. 


At Dixit house, Sonakshi makes Ishwari sit. She asks what she had been up to since morning.

Ishwari makes excuses.

Sonakshi says: Really? I thought you were making salads for me.

Ishwari is surprised: Arre, who told you?

Sonakshi: Your Soha.

Ishwari smiles: Yes, she was the one who read it from computer and I made exotic avocado salad.

Me: By the way, exotic in western world are Asians. As in us.

Sonakshi squeals and squeezes Ishwari's cheek: Oh so cute... Thank you. But you didn't have to do all this.

Ishwari says: Arre, why was it not needed? I also must know how to make what my daughter likes. Sonakshi, I am very happy. You brought back my Dev to me. It's good that you listened to your heart and won all of our heart. How can I thank you I don't know.

Sonakshi: No Maa. I should say thanks to you. If you hadn't gave me courage, then this won't have been possible. So thank you.

Ishwari says: I should have done a long time ago. Sonakshi, it's possible that I make mistakes again. Every relationships has ups and down. It's possible that our relationship has the same. Because we are two different people and our way of looking at things are different. No matter what happens, promise me Sonakshi that we will never let anything come between us. We will never let our relationship break. You are my home's prosperity (Lakshmi - Goddess of prosperity). My daughter-in-law didn't return to my home, my daughter did.

Sonakshi says: That's how it shall be. No matter what happens, I will never leave you. 

They hug.

Me: This was wonderful to watch. Their comfort level is at a point where nothing can ever shake the foundation of their relationship because this time they built it strong. Both of them now understand each other and accepted each other. They know that this time, they will both make equal effort to maintain their relationship. This is how solid relationships are formed.


At Bose house, Bhaiya is sitting down when Bijoy comes there. Both feel awkward.

Bijoy pleasantly asks: How was the food, son?

Bhaiya says: Good. 

He then asks: Did you want to say anything, uncle? 

He hesitates: Can I call you uncle?

Bijoy says: No, it's okay. Neither I want to say anything to you or ask you anything. I just want to wish you luck. 

Bhaiya asks: So you are okay with Sonakshi and my decision?

Bijoy thinks about it and says: I used to say that I want to go back to Kolkata because Kolkata is my home. But when I came back to this city after 7 years, I felt a strange feelings. I felt that this is my city, my home. Saurabh and Sona grew up here. I felt a connection here. Like you and Sona felt. That's why you forgot everything and came together. Am I saying right, son?

Bhaiya slowly nods.

Bijoy says: That's why I am saying good luck to you two. You always stay together. Don't be each other's weakness. Be each other's strength. And yes, never hurt each other again. Because your families love each other a lot. 

Bhaiya thinks about what Bijoy said and he says: I will try my best so that I don't disappoint you this time. 

The rest of the family watches them from the stairs and smile.

Me: Did I not say that Bijoy is the best character in the show? He said exactly what I said about strong love and weak love yesterday. Weak love saps your confidence, your trust on self. Strong love builds you up. 

Bijoy is not creating hindrance to what Sona wants. He is pointing out what broke them up in the first place twice. 

He may not fawn over Bhaiya. Frankly it can't be expected out of him. But when he gives a chance, it's 100% genuine. You can take his words to the bank.


Asha gives Bijoy tea (looks like on the same day since they are in same outfit). Just then Ishwari comes to Bose house.

They both greet her and welcome her.

Bijoy says: Dev just left from here.

Ishwari says: Really? Well, it's fine. I came to meet you guys.

Asha says: This is also your home. You can come anytime.

Bijoy also pleasantly says: Asha is right. You can come any time.

Me: I'd like to point out something here. Bijoy is much more comfortable and pleasant with Ishwari. He is no longer awkward with her, just like Sonakshi is no longer awkward with her.

Why? 

Because of the same reason. He saw her personal effort to rectify past mistakes. 

He doesn't know what Sona did for her. He doesn't need to know that either. What he knows and saw is Ishwari's change and genuine emotions which was very visible.

I can't emphasise enough on the importance of personal effort in maintaining relationships. 

You can pass by cheating in exam or letting someone do your homework. But when it comes to building a solid foundation of a relationship, personal efforts are the only way.



Ishwari smiles. She says: I want to say something to you.

Asha says: Is everything all right?

Ishwari says: Actually I want to ask you for something.

Asha is surprised: From us?

Ishwari says: And what I want, it's not little thing. But I know that you won't let me go empty handed. Today is a very happy day for all of us. Dev and Sonakshi chose each other again. That's why I want that... No, I want that if you also want this then what I'd like is...

Bijoy makes her comfortable: Look, you please forget the bitter words of the past and whatever you want to say please say it without hesitation.

Asha nods.

Ishwari says: What I want is that I take your daughter home, not as daughter-in-law, but take her home as my daughter.

Bijoy smiles.

Just then Dida, Ronita and Saurabh comes.

Bijoy asks Dida to sit.

Ishwari holds Ronita's hand and continues: You said that your daughter-in-law is like your second daughter, your friend. The same way, I want to take my friend, my daughter home forever. 

Bijoy, Asha and Ronita smile.

Ishwari says: That's why I came to you. Give me my daughter back.

Ishwari folds her hands.

Asha has tears in her eyes. She looks at Bijoy. Bijoy smiles at Asha. 

Ishwari looks tensed.

Bijoy looks at Saurabh and says: Why are you standing there looking at us? Didn't you hear what Ishwariji said? Go and get sweets for everyone.

Saurabh runs to get sweets with Ronita. 

Ishwari holds Dida's hands and smiles.

Asha also smiles through tears.

Me: This is exactly what Bijoy was looking for in season one and this is why he was not comfortable when Ishwari asked for Sonakshi then. Because him being the wise guy understood her motive then. And this time he is comfortable with her asking for Sonakshi is also because he again understands her motive this time. 

He has better understanding of people than his family gives him credit for. When in season one everyone was going ga-ga over Ishwari's magnanimous gesture, Bijoy was the only one who saw through Dev and Ishwari's toxic relationship of that time. 

Now when everyone was ready to dump Sonakshi on Dev, even before Ishwari's transformation, Bijoy again saw through that.

He is now satisfied that at least Ishwari won't abandon his daughter now nor she will make her feel like an outsider because Ishwari's sincerity is very visible. 

I didn't mind that Bhaiya called him Mogambo. If being Mogambo means that a girl will always have a knight to protect her from all harm and will always be there at her corner as her support, then I hope in every birth I get a father like this Mogambo. A true gentleman and worth his weight in Gold.


At Dixit house, Sonakshi is working on her laptop in the garden table. Bhaiya is staring at her.

Me: Does this woman carry her full size laptop everywhere? Seriously. Hasn't she heard of smartphones and tablets? Where does she fit her laptop?


She looks up and sees Bhaiya is standing there and staring at her. She smiles and he smiles too.

She then goes back to working.

Then she looks up again and says: I am working here. There's no problem about this naa?

Bhaiya says: As long as you are in front of me, there's no problem.

Sonakshi says: We work in the same building.

Bhaiya walks over and sits on the table: Yes, but there are too many walls between us. But here, it's just two of us.


Me: Bhaiya, kisko chuna laga rahe ho? Jaise ke hum ne dekha nehin ki kaise wahan bhi aapki head lights hamesha Sonakshi ki office ke direction mein gadi rehti thi.

(Who are you kidding, Bhaiya? Like we didn't see you with your head lights on the direction of Sonakshi's office.)


Sonakshi says: And Maa, Mamaji, Vicky, Elina, Mamiji, Soha and Golu.

Bhaiya says: You forgot one more.

Sonakshi wonders: Who?

Bhaiya says: JC.

Sonakshi smiles.

Bhaiya asks: I am not disturbing you, am I?

Sonakshi says: I am not disturbed.

Bhaiya says: That means you liked me coming here.

Sonakshi says: I didn't dislike it either.

They smile.

Bhaiya says: Isn't it strange? You are working and I am getting distracted. 

Me: That's not new, Bhaiya. You hardly work around Sonakshi. In fact, I have never seen you working in season two. What kind of company you have which runs on its own and generates income? I'd like to own one of those.


Sonakshi smiles: You have learned a lot of talks. I will get coffee for us, okay?

Bhaiya smiles. 

Sonakshi leaves.

So Bhaiya decided to snoop around in Sonakshi's work computer: Let's see what Ms. Bunny does.

Me: Are you serious? Honestly? Bhaiya, now scroll up and read my excerpt in the beginning on manners. 

First of all, this is not her personal stuff. But even if it was, looking through someone's, even your spouse's personal things are not only bad manners but also invading someone's privacy.

Secondly, this is her work stuff. There might be something confidential there like patient's data, their personal history etc. Do you understand that you are actually breaching her client's privacy by going through her work computer?

Am I the only one who finds this in poor manners and taste? 

I mean I never go through my husband's cell phone or private stuff unless he asks me to check something on his behalf and only then I check and only what he asked me to check. Nothing else. And I expect the same courtesy from him when it comes to my things. This is a big deal for me. 


He sees a bunch of emails in his name probably in the draft folder since he never received any email.

He smiles: You wrote me so many emails.

He starts reading them.

Me: Again, you ask her if it's okay for you to read them. Since she didn't send them, it's possible that she doesn't want you to read them. Which means that what you are doing right now is against her wish. This is where mutual respect comes in. You respect each other's wishes in a relationship.


At Bose house, Asha says to Ishwari: Ishwariji, you don't know that by saying this you fulfilled my dream. I was waiting for this day since last seven years.

Me: She doesn't know. But we all know what was your dream. You never fooled us, Asha. You were actually quite obvious. You wanted Sonakshi to be married, period. 


Ishwari says: I am sorry, I came too late.

Bijoy says: Ishwariji, forget the bitter past and have sweets.

Ishwari smiles: Yes, I am having it.

Asha says: Take one more.

She feeds Ishwari sweets.

Ishwari protests.

Bijoy says: Take one more. Even Sonakshi is not here right now.

Asha sits down.

Bijoy says: Ishwariji, now we have to look ahead and whatever we must do, we must do for our Dev and Sonakshi.

Ishwari says: Truly, I am very happy. You kept my word.

Bijoy smiles.

Asha says: I think we should talk to Dev and Sona and fix a nice date.

Ishwari nods: You are absolutely right. I will talk to Dev and you talk to Sonakshi. Now our two families have to share a lot of happiness. 

Then she remembers and takes out gifts for Sonakshi (looks jewellery). She says: I know that Sonakshi isn't at home. If she was here, I'd have given these to her myself. When she comes home, give these gifts to her. 

Asha takes the gifts and smiles.

Ishwari says: And tell her that her Maa has given this to her and very soon she will take her home in grand manner. 

Asha and Bijoy smile.


Me: Another beautiful scenes between the two families. I think that in another time, Bijoy and Ishwari could have been better family than Asha. Both are fiercely loyal. Bijoy is the only one who knew Ishwari and control her manipulations. But once they understood each other and Ishwari fixed her problem, both of them now respect each other. And this is a stronger respect because it was earned. It didn't come in free. 


Bhaiya reads Sonakshi's emails. He opens the one which Sonakshi wrote the day she found out about her pregnancy. She wrote about her joy and also wrote about her sadness of being alone at that time. She also wrote about her heartbreak when Bhaiya let her go while she kept looking back.

Bhaiya gets tears in his eyes.


Sonakshi comes there with coffee. She says: Dev.

Bhaiys says: Sonakshi... 

He nods to the laptop.

Sonakshi says: Dev, I was just going to delete them. I wrote them 7 years ago when I was angry and sad. To let that out I wrote those mails. They are of no use and means nothing now. Let me delete them.

Bhaiya stops her: What else will you delete, Sonakshi?

Sonakshi says: Dev, this was seven years ago...

Bhaiya says: Seven years which you and Suhana spent without me and faced all the troubles on your own. These are those seven years, no? I want to know what happened seven years ago. And what else will you delete? What you will delete from here (points at the laptop) will you be able to delete from here (points at her heart)?

Sonakshi: I missed you a lot in the past seven years. That's what is written on these emails. I just didn't send them.

Bhaiya: You wrote those mails for me, no? My name is there. Let me know what is in those. I want to know what happened to you in past seven years. I want to know what you went through. I was not with you. I want to know what happened in the past seven years. 

Sonakshi: There might be something that will hurt you. I was different then. It doesn't matter now.

Bhaiya: Sonakshi, now we are moving forward. That's why I want to know the past seven years. I want to know everything.

Sonakshi protests: But Dev...

Bhaiya says: Sonakshi, I said naa. I want to know. It will be good for both of us. So please send me those emails. 

Sonakshi says: In one condition.

Bhaiya says: What?

Sonakshi: I am sharing my past seven years with you. You will also have to do the same. 

Bhaiya says: Nothing special happened to me. And whatever happened, Elina has already told you. I haven't written even a page on my experience.

Bhaiya feels uncomfortable. But he says: Come on, send me.

Sonakshi: You have said it yourself that this is good for both of us. So is there something you'd like to tell me?
