UK Trip - Day 9

Today after breakfast, we left for Inverness. Our only planned stop today was Eileen Donan Castle, the most famous castle in Scotland. But then when do we ever only stop at planned stops.

After stopping multiple times for pictures, we finally reached Eileen Donan at 12 noon. Eileen is a Gaelic word which means Island and Donan is the name of the island. So the name means Island of Donan.

This Castle is owned by MacRae family now. But they used to be the guard for this Castle which in the past belonged to Mackenzie family. It was built in 13th century and was strategically located where three sea lochs meet Loch Duich, Loch Alsh and Loch Long.

There were many movies shot here. Some notable ones are "Highlander", the James Bond movie "The World is not Enough" and most recently "Maid of Honour".

The castle doesn't allow inside pictures, so we had to settle for outdoor ones.

Then we drove straight to Inverness or so was the plan. When we got close to Inverness, we saw that there's a castle on the way called Urquhart Castle.

So we did about turn and went back to check out the castle. Well, more like the ruin of the castle since the Grants blew it up themselves.

After walking in the ruins, we thought to get dinner before heading out to our accommodation for the night.

We found a bunch of Indian restaurants at downtown Inverness so had Indian food tonight. Then we went to our accommodation and went to bed.

Tomorrow we will explore Inverness.

    1. Honestly speaking, I also have enough. If not the history associated with the castles and how it impacted the past, won't bother with any other castles. But Mr. O is a history buff. So off we go to the next Castle. Lol...

    1. Game of Thrones is shot in Ireland which is very similar to Scotland. However, they did take inspiration from Scotland when they built sets.

Netflix series Outlander is shot here.

I like History too. But I like it as a story as in the broader picture. I am not like my husband who has to visit every nook and cranny and every location of a country to know the complete history of each portion. Lol...
